At the heart of every Centurion grade A cricket ball is a cork sphere which provides a dead centre of gravity for accurate flight and bounce.
The thread used is specially made with up to 10 cores for maximum strength and is wax impregnated against water penetration. The ball is then hot wax dipped and finally a layer of varnish is applied.
The nucleus is then hand-wound with alternate layers of Portuguese cork and fine wool until an exact sphere of precise dimensions and weight is formed. Before casing, leather stabilising cups are added.
Machine-cut quarters of "butt" portion grain leather are used to create virtually perfect hemispheres which are then fitted around the core, carefully joined and the vital seam formed.
